The hundreds of thousands of orginal documents held by Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire Archives, spanning 1179 to the present day, are a wonderfully tangible connection to the history of the north-east of Scotland. The texture and smell of paper, the bindings, the faded photographs and the almost indecipherable handwriting all help us to gain a greater understanding of the region's history. Choosing just fifty items to represent the myriad collections is only to scratch the surface of this amazing resource, which was inscribed on UNESCO's 'UK Memory of the World Register' in 2013 because of its status as the oldest and most complete archive of any Scottish town or city.
