Summary:
At several places around our sandy coasts there is evidence of the power of the wind and sand to swamp and bury human settlement, but nowhere else is there a group of sites like the northern one described in the pages that follow. These lost "villages" of the north are in reality, a very mixed group of settlement types. This brief survey of the four sites is an attempt to reflect this.
