Summary:
Jessie McTaggart stands trial, in March 1910, accused of sending malicious letters to the Rae sisters, causing them alarm and distress in the process. The jury rules in favour of the sisters and awards them a vast sum of money by way of compensation. Interested in the proceedings are Chief Inspector Jake Fraser and a mystery man sitting in the public gallery. For different reasons they are both concerned by the amount of money awarded and the weakness of the evidence provided. Soon after the trial ends, one of the sisters dies in what may, or may not, be an accident. Chief Inspector Fraser finds himself investigating the incident. Meanwhile, Inspector Mathieson has been investigating the brutal murder of a man in a George Street property, which had happened before the trial began. Mathieson is of the opinion he is looking for someone accustomed to killing, someone he does not expect to find. Another member of the family is then murdered, making it more than possible that someone is avenging the outcome of the trial by killing those who gained most from it. How many more might die if Chief Inspector Fraser and Inspector Mathieson do not find the killer quickly? They must work together to uncover the killer, assisted along the way by a source rarely known to help the police. A source with connections the police could never have but will definitely need.
