This is a reissue of two novels, written about a century ago, which have been out of print, eagerly sought after, and virtually unobtainable for many years. We found it impossible, indeed, to buy second-hand copies to print from, and had to fall back on the kindness of a private owner. We would add nothing to what Dr. C. S. Lewis has written about Phantastes: but it must be said of Lilith also that, apart from the qualities that endear it to all lovers of Poe, it is a masterpiece, and a profoundly moving one, of spiritual insight.
