The following lecture was written in the few intervals snatched from a time unusually full of professional demands, and was not prepared for appearing in its present form. If it does not convey any great amount of actual information, the hope, that, as an outline of such knowledge, it may serve to stir up thought, stimulate enquiry, and excite to action, is the inducement for allowing it, "with all its imperfections on its head," to go to the press.
