Romantic drama based on the experiences of a family troupe of English actors performing the works of William Shakespeare around post-colonial India. With the emerging popularity of Bollywood films the Buckingham family troupe struggle to gain much popularity on their latest tour. When rich playboy Sanju (Shashi Kapoor) begins to take an interest in Shakespeare he attends some of their performances and subsequently falls in love with Lizzie (Felicity Kendal) despite the fact he is already in a relationship with popular Bollywood actress Manjula (Madhur Jaffrey).
