Born in 1811, Andrew Jameson was educated at Perth Academy and the University of St. Andrews before studying law at the University of Edinburgh. As Sheriff-Substitute of the County of Edinburgh (1845-1865) he was a prominent figure in Edinburgh society and included among his close friends Sir James Young Simpson , the pioneer figure in anaesthetics, Sir Noel Paton, the artist, and Sir David Brewster, Principal of the University of Edinburgh. In 1865 he was appointed Sheriff of Aberdeenshire, the first sheriff-substitute ever to be promoted to this position.
