Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer star in this musical drama directed by Robert Wise. In 1938 in Salzburg, free-spirited Maria (Andrews) is studying to become a nun but the Mother Abbess (Peggy Wood) decides it would be better to send her to the home of widower Captain Georg von Trapp (Plummer) to serve as the governess to his seven children. They are initially resistant but along with discipline, Maria brings love, music and excitement into their lives and soon wins them over. Maria and the Captain ultimately fall in love but when Austria is annexed by Nazi Germany, they must attempt to flee to Switzerland with the children to escape the coming war. The cast also includes Charmian Carr, Eleanor Parker and Richard Haydn.
