Emotional drama about sexual awakening and tangled relationships, based on the first part of John Irving's classic novel, 'A Widow for One Year'. Eccentric children's author Ted Cole is suffering from writer's block, little aware that his wife Marion (Kim Basinger) is still tortured by the deaths of their two sons in an accident many years before. When Cole takes in Eddie (Jon Foster), a young writing student, to stay with them over the summer, Marion finds herself gradually falling into a sexual relationship with the young man. Eddie's presence is ironically the one thing that could rejuvenate Marion and Ted's tired, brittle marriage.
