Second film version of the Hawthorne classic about Hester Prynne (Demi Moore), a beautiful, free-spirited woman who is trapped in a puritanical settlers' colony, where she is dominated by her violent husband, Chillingworth (Robert Duvall). When she falls in love with the Reverend Dimsdale (Gary Oldman), they risk everything to be together, and must face the wrath of both the local settlers, who want to rid the colony of sin, and that of Prynne's betrayed husband, who leads the settlers to revolt.
