Tommy Lee Jones directs and stars in this modern-day western as Pete Perkins, an old-fashioned cowboy in a small Texas town near the border with Mexico. He hires Melquiades Estrada (Julio César Cedillo) to work as a ranch hand and the two men form a laconic friendship. When Melquiades is shot and killed in suspicious circumstances, Pete takes the law into his own hands and kidnaps psychotic border patrolman Mike Norton (Barry Pepper). Forcing him to dig up Melquiades' body, the two men then begin a long and difficult journey on horseback to deliver Melquiades' body to his family in Mexico.
