Stephen Spielberg directs this adaptation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer prize-winning novel, starring Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover. Over the course of 40 years, the film follows the life of Celie (Goldberg), a poor black woman who endures years of abuse from her father and her husband (Glover). When her husband embarks on an affair with the beautiful Shug (Margaret Avery), an attraction is also formed between the two women, and lonely Celie finally begins to blossom. The cast also includes Oprah Winfrey, Akosua Busia and Laurence Fishburne.
