80s crime thriller set in a sultry summer in Miami. Kurt Russell stars as small-time news reporter Malcolm Anderson, who becomes caught up in a career-making story when a serial killer, Alan Delour (Richard Jordan) admires his account of one of his murders and decides to use the journalist as his mouthpiece. As the killings continue, Anderson starts to gain national recognition for his work, at which point Delour - known as the 'Numbers Killer' - becomes jealous and kidnaps Anderson's school-teacher girlfriend Christine (Mariel Hemingway) to show him who's boss.
