Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce play Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in this film, which is loosely based on the stage play by William Gillette. Holmes's nemesis Professor Moriarity (George Zucco), having recently been acquitted of murder, has devised a scheme for stealing the famous Star of Delhi from the Crown Jewels housed in the Tower of London. In order to distract Holmes from this monumental crime, the dastardly villain orchestrates a diversion involving a young socialite, Ann Brandon (Ida Lupino) who, seemingly plagued by a terrible family curse, has been receiving death threats. Even Holmes cannot be in two places at the same time - so how can he uncover Moriarty's duplicity and solve this apparently watertight crime?
