Abstract: In August 1969 the British Railways Board placed contracts for the detailed design and manufacture of a prototype train capable of up to 150 mph on existing track. Known as the Advanced Passenger Train, it will be the culmination of several years' research by the Railway Technical Centre , Derby. This paper brings together those details which have been made public, and seeks to tell something of why and how the APT was developed.
