Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster star in this war drama directed by Robert Wise. During World War II, the Japanese destroyer Akikaze has sunk four US submarines in the Bungo Straits. Commander P.J. Richardson (Gable) lost his previous submarine to the Akikaze and its captain, who they call Bungo Pete, and is determined to exact revenge. When he is given command of the USS Nerka, he disobeys orders and returns to the Bungo Straits to sink the Akikaze but his executive officer Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe (Lancaster) fears that Richardson's quest for vengeance is endangering their crew. The cast also includes Nick Cravat, Don Rickles and Jack Warden.
