Charlie Chaplin: Monsieur Verdoux [videorecording]
2003
Videos and DVDs
Charles Chaplin wrote and directed this Oscar-nominated black comedy, in which he plays a family man who supports his wife and child by courting rich widows and murdering them. Eventually he is caught and tried for mass murder. On its release the film found little favour with audiences, who were uneasy with its satirical, anti-war subtext. Later, in light of the popularity of films such as 'Dr Strangelove', Chaplin's film was re-assessed and is now considered to be one of his best.
