Following David's (Robert Bathurst) short-lived affair in the previous series, he is now trying to repair the damage it did to his marriage; but wife Karen (Hermione Norris) keeps him at a distance and develops an increasingly out-of-control drinking problem. Meanwhile, Adam (James Nesbitt) and Rachel (Helen Baxendale) are considering adoption; and Pete (John Thomson) falls for Rachel's Australian friend Jo (Kimberley Joseph) when the latter starts renting his spare room.
