The three villages in this book are located in north-west Aberdeenshire with Turriff, the nearest town, around six miles from Cuminestown. Cuminestown and New Byth were among the earliest examples of planned villages in the district and date from the 1760s while Garmond was founded towards the end of the eighteenth century, with the first baptism recorded there in April 1800. Cuminestown was founded in 1761 by Joseph Cumine of Auchry and New Byth was founded in 1763 by James Urquhart of Byth.
