As part of a major development to transform the internal appearance and function of the East Kirk of St Nicholas, one of the largest excavations within a Scottish medieval burgh church took place in 2006. Remarkably well-preserved evidence emerged of successive building and rebuilding of the east end of St Nicholas Church over at least 800 years. Analysis and examination of material ranging from thousands of drawings and plans through vast numbers of objects and small finds to over 900 human skeletons will continue over forthcoming months and years. First interpretations are important, though, and the pages which follow offer an initial summary of the discoveries made during the project so far.
