American Western in which widower Matt Calder (Robert Mitchum), his young son Mark (Tommy Rettig) and nightclub singer Kay (Marilyn Monroe), who has been abandoned by her husband Harry (Rory Calhoun), have no choice but to travel downstream to escape their tumultuous lives. En route they begin to form their own surrogate family, which acts as a replacement for the broken homes they have left behind.
