"The lists are an attempt at establishing the succession in the principal dignities and offices of the cathedrals and dioceses of mediaeval Scotland. For the cathedrals served by secular clergy the lists cover the Deans, Precentors, Chancellors, Treasurers, Subdeans and Succentors, or as many of these dignitaries as were established in each case. For all the dioceses the lists cover the Archdeacons and the Bishop's officials. The aim is first to establish the earliest known date of the existence of the dignity or office (and of any attached prebend), and then to trace the succession of holders thenceforward to 1560".
