At the age of 47, Christian Watt began to write down her recollections of her life. She continued until her death at the age of 90 in 1923. What is extraordinary is that most of them were written after she suffered a breakdown and was confined to Cornhill Infirmary, Aberdeen. Encouraged by her enlightened ahd humane treatment there, she produced some of the most fascinating memoirs to come out of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Scotland. Her writing is fuelled by her sense of family pride, her anger at social injustice, her hatred of war and her profound religious faith.
