"Raedykes is an extensive or marching camp about four miles north-west of Stonehaven (centre at NO 842902) and less than twenty miles south of Aberdeen. It is one of a chain of such camps situated along the northward march of the Roman legions into Aberdeenshire and lies on rising ground about the 500' countour in the valley of the Kincardineshire Urie. The derivation of the name is possibly from rath or ra meaning an enclosure or defence and dykes, the northern word for entrenchment or big ditch. Raedykes was probably built in A.D. 83 during the brief campaigns conducted by Agricola against the Caledonians in the sixth year of his governship. Radeykes is the best preserved earthwork in Grampian - unusually well preserved - and still almost entire"
