The loud halo

Beckwith, Lillian1987
Books, Manuscripts
Now she has settled into a life conditioned by winter gales and summer midges, by capricious wells and demanding cows: it is a charmed existence, enlivened by her contact with the warm-hearted and often hilariously eccentric neighbours who crowded her pages, arguing and laughing among each other. There is a wise, mischievous Morag, always ready with reassuring advice; irresistible Hector with his charming lisp ('Miss Peckwitt, give the cow a wind to see will it start her off'); old Johnny Comic, tender-hearted and simple, full of love for the flowers he tries to grow; his sister, the spinster Kirsty, rigidly confined by her religion, who remarked of Johnny's death: 'Ach, he was always the same, any little thing killed him'.
