Where the apple ripens : and other stories

Kesson, Jessie, 1916-19941985
Books, Manuscripts
Rich in rural folklore, this latest collection of short stories by popular Scottish author Jessie Kesson deals in transitions and the sorrows they bring. In the title story, for example, the author writes of a young girl's coming of age as she leaves the village school for domestic employment in a nearby town, her childhood world disturbed both by her first sexual experience and by the death of a school friend. Elsewhere, a strong, simple-minded boy is wrongly blamed for a young girl's pregnancy, and an old woman faces life without her best friend in the old folks home. Despite an underlying pathos, Kesson's fiction has warmth and a wry wit; her characters seem to rise above the often harsh socioeconomic climate of the Scottish Highlands
