Rainer Werner Fassbinder writes and directs this German drama starring Volker Spengler as transgender woman Elvira Weishaupt as she recounts the story of her life and loves. In her previous life, she fell in love with a man who encouraged her to undergo transition surgery so that they could be together as a heterosexual couple. However, once the transition was complete, Elvira was cast aside by her lover and left to deal with the consequences of her new identity.
