Shia LaBeouf stars as Padre Pio, the Italian Capuchin priest, in this biographical drama directed by Abel Ferrara. After the First World War, men return home to the impoverished village of San Giovanni Rotondo where they struggle with their poor health and find themselves at the mercy of a corrupt landowner. When their attempts to hold a free election are met with violence, Padre Pio, who has witnessed their plight, attempts to save them from Satan's influence and receives the stigmata. The cast also includes Asia Argento, Cristina Chiriac and Vincenzo Crea.
