The writer of this short reminiscent sketch, on the eve of his retirement from the Company, with which during the long period of 58 years he has been so closely associated, on the suggestion of some of his friends, desires to place on record his recollections of its splendid development from small things into the huge concern of to-day; and of the men who have been mainly responsible from its expansion. The sketch has been made up from loose notes gathered together, and lays no claim to literary merit but to be a plain statement of facts.
