Discontinuities was Alastair Mackie's title for the collection of journals and poetry notebooks that he kept from his time as a telegraph operator on a minesweeper in the Mediterranean in 1945 till the year of his death, 1995, aged 69. It is a rich collection of poetic experiments in Scots and in English, and provides Mackie's commentary not only on his own work, but on the work of his Scottish and European contemporaries.
