Laurencekirk was the birthplace of the distinctive, hand-made, decorated boxes and other wooden items that began the finely-decorated Scottish woodenware industry. Charles Stiven is recogised as the original craftsman who made the fine wooden boxes with the integral hinge that exist today. This article discusses the decoration of these boxes; in particular, their link to the town of Spa in Belgium and the artist Vincent Hubert Brixhe.
