In 1916 Aberdeen's Medical Officer of Health (MOH), Matthew Hay, gifted this large bound volume complete with meteorological tables that had featured in his monthly and yearly reports on the health of the city. He subsequently provided copies of these weather reports to be added to the volume as they were published until 1931. Two letters from Hay to G. M. Fraser, chief librarian at Aberdeen Public Library, included at the start of the book explain this arrangement. An introductory note states "On a request from the Medical Officer of Health, the Town Council authorised his procuring monthly, from the Assistant Superintendent of the Observatory at King's College, a statement of certain meteorological observations for issue in the Monthly Reports on the Health of the City. [...] The issue of these meteorological tables in the Monthly Reports of the Medical Officer of Health was begun in 1892. A yearly summary first appeared in the Yearly Report for 1907." The Monthly Records were discontinued in September 1931, though summaries of weather data continued to feature in later MOH yearly reports.
