Books, Manuscripts
Alexander Rule was born in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on the 21st September 1895. He died, aged 87, at the Cottage Hospital, Meigle, Perthshire, Scotland on the 4th of July 1983. "Yet another glorious day" is the most frequent description of the weather given by this eighteen-year Aberdeen University student in his 1915 diary. For most of that year, Alexander Rule, was a private in D Company, 4th Battalion of The Gordon Highlanders, fighting on the Western Front. This transcript of his personal diary changes as the realities of seeing friends killed and the often harsh living conditions sink in. Yet it is not all doom and gloom. Visits to local cafes are numerous, mail arrives regularly, singsongs are frequent and there is trememdous camaderie.
