French animated feature following a young boy's adventure as he goes on a journey from Sudan to Paris. An old man recounts the story of ten-year-old Sudanese orphan Maki, who escapes from slave traders and encounters a young giraffe, later named Zarafa. After promising Zarafa's dying mother that he will take care of her, Maki finds himself joining Bedouin nomad Hassan on his travels as he carries out his mission to take the gift of a giraffe to the King of France on behalf of the Pasha of Egypt. After an eventful journey they arrive in Paris where Zarafa is locked up in the local zoo and Maki becomes determined to rescue his animal friend and take her back to her home country.
