Robert Wise directs this adaptation of the novel by Harry Bates. When a non-threatening alien (Michael Rennie) comes to Earth in 1951 with a message of peace, he is shot and wounded by nervous troops. Seeing this as an act of aggression, his ten-foot robot Gort (Lock Martin) immediately renders all Earth's weapons useless while the alien delivers an ultimatum to the world: stop fighting or be destroyed.
