Biopic exploring the secret love life of author Daphne du Maurier. The acclaimed author, who kept her lesbian preferences suppressed because of her father's disgust for homosexuals, nevertheless had two great loves of her life. Although her love for American publisher Nelson Doubleday's wife Ellen (Elizabeth McGovern) was unrequited, it inspired her to write a play about forbidden love, 'September Tide', that led to her meeting her second love, the bisexual American actress Gertrude Lawrence (Janet McTeer), an ultimately more successful union.
