Double bill of children's comedy adventures. In 'Matilda' (1996) Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) is an exceptionally gifted and intelligent child but her parents Harry (DeVito) and Zinnia (Rhea Perlman) neglect her and treat her with her contempt. A keen reader, her dearest wish is to go to school, but the establishment Harry selects is Crunchem Hall which is run by the brutal Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). Her cruel treatment of her pupils and Matilda's favourite teacher, Miss Honey (Embeth Davidzt), inspires Matilda to use her newly discovered telekinetic powers to seek revenge and change her life. In 'A Simple Wish' (1997), when seven-year-old Anabel (Wilson) wishes that her father could win the lead role in a Broadway musical so that her family does not have to move to Nebraska, she is not expecting Murray (Martin Short), a male fairy godmother, to appear in her life. Murray desperately wants to be taken seriously in a profession dominated by women and hopes that helping Anabel will improve his chances. After Claudia (Kathleen Turner), a former fairy godmother who has turned evil, steals all of the other fairy godmothers' wands, she just needs Murray's to become all-powerful. Can Anabel and Murray work together to put an end to Claudia's evil schemes?
